In 1794 Louis XVII imprisoned in the Temple was freed from the Vicomte de Barras and was brought to America. As Louis came back to Europe in 1805 to proceed in the protection of French emigrants, he is arrested by Napoleon's agents and is brought in the French fortress Mainz.

On initiative of Madame Botta and Vavel de Versay from Eishausen the duke Carl August of Weimar asks his privy councillor Goethe to free the prince from Mainz and to bring him to Thuringia. An adventurous freeing action with many unexpected turns begins together with Friedrich Schiller, Alexander von Humboldt, Heinrich von Kleist, Achim von Arnim and Bettine Brentano. The story ends with a dramatic fight in the Castle Eishausen.

An exciting and imaginative novel which fascinates especially by its language conformist the past of the acting persons as well as by numerous amusing allusions.
