Brye, B. de (1993):
La princesse, le prince charmant et l’évêque. Monseigneur de la Fare et la négociation du mariage de Madame Royale (1796-1799).
In: Revue d’histoire diplomatique, October 1993, page 289-308.

Content:
The author gives detailed information about the negotiation to Madame Royale during her time in Vienna between 1796 and 1799. Instructed by Louis XVIII the cardinal La Fare tries to arrange the marriage of Madame Royale and the Duke of Angoulême. He had success. The marriage happened in June 1799.

The author clearly shows how Madame Royale expressed itself shortly after her arrival in Vienna against a marriage with archduke Karl. She explains to the emperor that she thinks to marry the Duke of Angoulême and gets married only to approval of her uncle Louis XVIII. At the end of January 1796 she gives a letter for Louis XVIII to Madame de Soucy in whom she accepts to marry only Duke of Angoulême.

Madame Royale had at the time of her stay in Vienna a great political importance. She was a candidate on the French throne: who married her, would have good chances to mount one day the throne of France. Maybe the emperor held her, therefore, so long in Vienna because he believed to be able to retune her in his sense.
